National Taiwan University says that it has seen a jump in the number of requests from Hong Kong for admission to its visiting student program.
Recent unrest in the territory has included clashes between police and university students.
National Taiwan University’s visiting student program is a non-degree program that allows students from partner institutions come and study for up to a full academic year.
Between Wednesday and Thursday, the university received 111 applications for the program from Hong Kong-based students. This brings the total number of applications from Hong Kong up to 562.
Just over half of applicants are Taiwanese nationals studying in Hong Kong and looking to come home. The number of Hong Kongers looking to enroll in the program is smaller, but this group has grown the most since Wednesday.
The remaining students include Chinese and foreign students looking to leave Hong Kong and come study in Taiwan.
The university says it plans to start sending out the first batch of acceptance letters via e-mail on Friday. The university’s student counseling center says it will arrange group and individual psychological support sessions especially for students arriving from Hong Kong.
