Kindergarten teachers are calling on the government to regulate aftercare services. Of particular concern are schedules, costs, and subsidies.
Many kindergartens stay open after regular hours, allowing working parents more flexibility. However, there are no clear regulations in place on the minimum number of children needed to open up an afterhours class.
Fees also vary widely between different kindergartens: some charge NT$1,600 (US$52) per child every month, whereas one kindergarten charges NT$25,000 (US$820) for a single child.
At a press conference on Thursday, members of the National Federation of Teachers Union said that the government needs to mandate a standard fee and set uniform hours for aftercare services.
