The United States is concerned about Chinese attempts to influence Taiwan’s 2020 presidential election. That’s according to the director of the American Institute in Taiwan, Brent Christensen. The institute is the de facto US embassy in Taiwan in the absence of official diplomatic ties.
Christensen said Friday that the US has noticed Chinese attempts to meddle in Taiwan’s democratic process and its use of disinformation to make Taiwanese people lose trust in their system. He said the US will work with Taiwan to fight against fake news.
Christensen said he has faith that Taiwan will hold a fair election. He also said that the US will cooperate with whoever the Taiwanese people choose as their leader.
Christensen also reaffirmed the Taiwan Relations Act, which is the cornerstone of the unofficial Taiwan-US relationship. He said the US and Taiwan share their values through tourism, immigration, academia, and technological exchange.
Christensen said he is proud of the joint efforts of the US and Taiwan to promote friendship between their people.
