Poll result shows HK’s determined pursuit of freedom: Pres. Office
Hong Kongers vote in a district council election Sunday.

The Presidential Office says that the pro-democracy camp’s victory in Hong Kong’s district council election shows that Hong Kongers are determined to pursue freedom and democracy.

The vote on Sunday saw historic turnout, with a record high of over 70% of eligible voters casting ballots. Results show the pro-democracy camp winning a majority of seats.

On Monday, Presidential Office spokesperson Ting Yung-kun repeated calls for Beijing and the Hong Kong government to accept the will of Hong Kong’s people. Ting called for Beijing and the Hong Kong government to keep promises of freedom and democracy for the territory, and to engage in sincere dialogue with Hong Kong’s people.

Meanwhile, in a Facebook post Monday, Vice Premier Chen Chi-mai said the vote shows that Hong Kong’s people inevitably reject an anti-democracy, pro-Beijing course. Chen said that while the powers of Hong Kong’s district counsellors are limited, Hong Kong’s people have used this election to send a message to the Hong Kong government and to Beijing.
