DPP drafts bill penalizing election interference
Members of the Democratic Progressive Party caucus including caucus whip Ker Chien-ming (center) unveil a bill aimed at penalizing election interference.

The Democratic Progressive Party caucus has drawn up a bill that would punish those who help interfere in Taiwanese elections.

The bill comes amid concern about Chinese efforts to meddle in Taiwan’s 2020 election, set to take place in January.

The bill targets those who aid or abet election interference. These include people who agree to help interfere in elections as well as those who recruit them. In addition to general elections, the bill also covers drives to recall politicians as well as referendums. The bill mandates up to five years in prison and a fine of up to NT$5 million (US$164,000) for violators.

Among the acts explicitly prohibited in the bill are disturbing lawful assemblies and parades.

The Democratic Progressive Party’s caucus whip, Ker Chien-ming, called on all parties to hold reasoned discussion on the bill and ensure its swift passage.
