Women's groups began a 16-day campaign against gender-based violence on Monday by launching sky lanterns in Pingxi, New Taipei City. The campaign began on the November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and ends on December 10, International Human Rights Day.

Over 5,000 organizations from 187 countries are participating in this 16-day campaign. It was started by activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991 and continues to be coordinated each year by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership. It is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for and prevent violence against women and girls.  This year's global theme is "Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape!"
