President Tsai Ing-wen says the situation in Hong Kong has further underlined the importance of safeguarding freedom and democracy. Tsai was speaking Tuesday while meeting with a US congressional delegation led by Representatives Bill Flores and Guy Reschenthaler.
Tsai talked about the joint efforts made by the two countries to uphold the values of freedom and democracy.
“Taiwan is at the strategic front line of the Indo-Pacific region, and it is the first line of defense in safeguarding democratic values. While Hong Kong people’s pursuit of democracy and freedom [since June] has been suppressed, the worsening situation in Hong Kong has further underlined the importance of our safeguarding the values of freedom and democracy together. We have taken note of the bill passed by the US Senate and House of Representatives recently to support Hong Kong people’s human rights and democracy. The [passage] shows that those core values are the biggest consensus in all democracies regardless of party affiliation," said Tsai.
Tsai said Taiwan is America’s firm partner and that relations between the two sides have received bi-partisan support in the United States. Tsai promised to continue strengthening cooperation in all fields.
