The foreign ministry says the government is working to prevent China from interfering in January’s presidential elections. That’s the word from Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Joanne Ou on Tuesday.
Ou said the foreign ministry is closely watching the case involving Chinese spy Wang Liqiang who claims to have interfered in Taiwan’s local elections. Wang is currently seeking political asylum in Australia.
Ou said Taiwan welcomes international cooperation to jointly crack down on foreign intervention.
“Taiwan is happy to cooperate with all like-minded countries such as Australia and the United States to jointly fight the onset of fake news and other foreign forces. This includes the Chinese government’s inappropriate intervention in our country’s democratic process. We do this to ensure the results of next year’s legislative and presidential elections can reflect true public opinion in Taiwan " said Ou.
Ou said the government will safeguard Taiwan’s hard-won democracy so it will continue to be a beacon of freedom.
