President Tsai Ing-wen says that she will not rule out a meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping if it will help maintain cross-strait peace. However, she says that such a meeting must not come at a cost to national sovereignty or national security.
In a TV interview broadcast Wednesday evening, Tsai was asked about the possibility of a meeting with Xi Jinping if she is reelected. Tsai called the idea “enticing”, but said that as president, her responsibility is to protect Taiwan’s basic interests.
Tsai was asked about the possibility of a meeting with Xi again on Thursday. She said that she is open to any possibility that could secure cross-strait stability, but not at a price to Taiwan.
