The Mainland Affairs Council says that there is a need to introduce legislation that cracks down on outside interference in Taiwan’s affairs. The council is Taiwan’s top China policy-making body.
Deputy Council Minister Chiu Chui-cheng told a hearing Thursday that Taiwan is faced with hostile outside forces. Chiu said the legislation targeting outside interference will protect national security and ensure the normal operation of Taiwan’s democratic system.
While ruling DPP lawmakers and some academics have called for laws targeting outside interference, the opposition KMT camp is against the idea. The KMT says a draft bill introduced by the DPP lacks enough human rights protection and could be used to suppress freedom.
