Taiwan is welcoming applications for 5G licenses. The National Communications Council (NCC) began the process on Tuesday and said decisions should come out within two weeks.

Acting NCC Chairman Chen Yaw-Shyang said that 5G technology is going to change the way we live. It is 10 to 100 times faster than 4G. Its broad connectivity will make it useful for IoT, telematics, and AI applications.

Taiwan is poised to be one of the world's first nations to enjoy nationwide 5G connectivity by the middle of next year. This means a much better experience for mobile users and a much more advanced digital infrastructure.

South Korea is currently the world leader in 5G licenses. It already has nearly 5 million users. Japan will use 5G with 4K and 8K technology to bring the Olympics to the world next year. China launched its commercial 5G services in November while Taiwan will begin commercial 5G services in the second half of next year.

Chen also said that its effect on national security will be monitored. He said all applications for licenses must include a plan for security measures and companies must carry out the plan or they will be punished according to the law.
