The interior ministry says it has been on the lookout for Chinese officials coming to Taiwan illegally for tourism purposes.
Deputy Minister Chen Tsung-yen told the Cabinet Thursday that Taiwan-based organizations and travel agencies appeared to have worked together to bring Chinese officials to Taiwan. These officials were supposedly invited to take part in cross-strait exchanges, but took part in tourism activities instead.
It is believed that officials behind Chinese efforts to take control of Taiwan may have been among their number.
Chen said that the National Immigration Agency became aware of one “irregular” cross-strait exchange in 2017, and reported it to a national security team.
He said the interior ministry has since been investigating the cross-strait links of various Taiwanese groups and organizations.
Chen said that it will take time to finish investigating all of the groups, and that the interior ministry will need international cooperation to trace these groups’ cash flows.
