Taipei’s most popular museum, the National Palace Museum, opened a southern branch in Chiayi in 2015. However its rural location can make it difficult to get to. This has hurt attendance. But new events and exhibits have started turning things around.
Last year, the southern branch of the National Palace Museum organized an event centered on hip hop culture. It got rave reviews. Because of that success, the museum saw the number of visitors rise. Year-end attendance has broken one million mark.
On December 21, the southern branch will hold a concert featuring contemporary Taiwanese musicians like rock band Tizzy Bac and rapper Dwagie. There will also be an arts bazaar and children’s storytelling.
The event will also include digital exhibits of some works from other museums, such as the Louvre. This serves as a prelude to a virtual reality exhibition hall at the museum in the second half of next year.
