A Taiwanese woman has documented her experience as a volunteer working with children in a remote part of Kenya. It took the woman -- Lee I-chun -- and other volunteers 28 hours to get to the village of Kitale in October.
Despite concerns about personal safety and hygiene, Lee had one strong conviction: that a little effort could make a big difference. She brought with her medicine kits, cloth tampons and stationery. And most importantly: a little TLC.
It’s a heart-warming welcome! Young Kenyan girls in a remote village greet the visitors with song and dance.
Their guests are a small group of volunteers from Taiwan, including Lee I-chun.
The children are elementary school students in a village called Kitale, a place that few foreigners have ever visited.
Lee and other volunteers helped sanitize the children’s feet and remove sand fleas from around their toenails.
Lee says it wasn’t easy to adjust to the living conditions… the hardest part was going to the bathroom at night, because there was no light and no place to wash their hands. But Lee has no complaints. After all, she was there to spread a little love from Taiwan.
