Far Eastern Air waiting approval to fly
Far Eastern Air Transport is still waiting to resume operations (CNA)

Far Eastern Air Transport is waiting for approval from the Civil Aeronautics Administration to resume operations. That’s after an announcement last Thursday that the local airline would stop operations due to financial difficulties. The following day, the airline’s Vice President Chang Kang-wei said the whole incident was a misunderstanding and hopes the airline would resume flights soon.

Since the first announcement, the labor ministry has investigated the company to see if has violated labor laws. The bureau said on Tuesday that the company has not violated any laws.

The bureau also clarified that if a company owner owes NT$20 million (US$600,000), the government can ban the owner from leaving Taiwan. The bureau said it would look into changing laws so that owners who lay off many employees will be banned from leaving the country as well.

Labor Minister Hsu Ming-chun said the bureau would continue to monitor Far Eastern Air to make sure employees’ rights are protected in the case of a major lay off.
