Former KMT Taipei Mayoral Candidate Ting Shou-chung has criticized the Taipei High Court for its verdict that legitimizes the results of the previous mayoral election.
During the last local elections held on November 24, 2018, incumbent independent candidate Ko Wen-je was re-elected Taipei Mayor, edging out Ting by less than 0.3% of the votes. The election process was controversial as the ballot counting process began while many were still waiting to vote at their local ballots. The lines of voters were unusually long due partly to the referendum on ten issues held alongside the vote for local leaders.
Ting and his camp said that the development could have affected the outcome and he filed a lawsuit to nullify the election result. On Tuesday, the Taiwan High Court ruled that the election result remains valid.
Ting criticized the court ruling, saying that the court essentially supports a severe breach of the voting procedure and of Taiwan’s constitution. He said the ruling shows that Taiwan’s laws only protect those in power and do little justice for those treated unfairly.
