Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council said Tuesday that it is negotiating with its Chinese counterpart to arrange more cross-strait flights during the peak travel season in January.

Taiwan’s presidential election and the 2020 Lunar New Year both fall in January. These events see a jump in demand for cross-strait travel as Taiwanese people based in China return home. An overseas Taiwanese business association recently called on the government to add more cross-strait flights since all flights scheduled between January 8 and 10 are fully booked.

The Mainland Affairs Council responded to the request on Tuesday, saying that negotiations with Chinese authorities on the issue are ongoing. The council also said that there are still seats available on flights scheduled in the run up to the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday.
