Representatives from Taiwan’s higher education institutions have called on presidential candidates to propose concrete policies aimed at improving the quality of Taiwan’s higher education system.
Several higher education unions and organizations held a joint press conference on Friday -- just two days after three major candidates made televised policy presentations. The officials said that none of the candidates proposed ideas that addressed issues in Taiwan’s higher education system.
You Jong-ta, head of the Union of Private School Employees, said he hopes the candidates will address Taiwan’s lack of investment in higher education. Several other officials say that the candidates and their parties should raise wages for educators. They also said the government should take steps to reduce the number of colleges and universities, as a dropping birthrate has caused a shortage of students.
