The justice ministry says it is regrettable that Hong Kong has repeatedly rejected Taiwan’s call for judicial assistance.
In a statement released on Sunday night, the ministry accused the Hong Kong government of failing to do justice for victims in two isolated cases and turning a blind eye to the rights of their families.
One high-profile murder case involves Hong Kong suspect Chan Tong-kai, who admitted to killing his girlfriend during a trip to Taiwan last year before fleeing back to Hong Kong. Another case involves a suspected Taiwanese robber who fled Hong Kong and returned to Taiwan in October.
The ministry said Taiwan is committed to fighting cross-border crime and has never used excuses or political considerations to shirk its responsibilities.
In response to the justice ministry’s accusations, the Hong Kong government said it is averse to what it called “Taiwan’s irresponsible comments that denigrate HK.” It also said Taiwan is well aware that there is no law that would allow Hong Kong to offer judicial assistance and extradite criminals to Taiwan.
