The road-widening project on part of Provincial Highway No. 9 officially opened for traffic on Monday.
This is the South Link Highway, a section of Provincial Highway No. 9 which runs from Taitung in the east, to Pingtung in the south. It’s considered one of the most beautiful roads in Taiwan. Ten years of construction have now made it wider and straighter than ever before.
Straightening out the curves has shortened the south link highway by 20 km, cutting travel time by 30 minutes. But it also means that Highway No. 9 is no longer the longest in Taiwan. That distinction now goes to Highway No. 1 on the west coast.
