Chen Ying, an 86-year old folk singer, stands out as the oldest recipient of this year’s Arts Education Contribution Awards.
Each year, the education ministry gives the award out to individuals who have contributed significantly to the preservation and education of art in Taiwan.
Folk singer Chen Ying received the Arts Education Contribution Award for her role in expanding the influence folk songs had across Taiwan. Her most notable performance this year took place at the opening ceremony of the Taiwan Lantern Festival in Pingtung County. There Chen led 1,000 people in a group singing performance.
Chen was absent from the award ceremony due to health concerns. Despite this, Deputy Education Minister Fan Sun-lu led a standing ovation to honor her achievement.
