Taiwan and Germany have signed an agreement to allow each other’s citizens to obtain a driver’s license without taking a road test. Applicants must have a license in their country of origin. Germany’s representative office in Taipei posted on its Facebook page that the good news was intended as a Christmas present for Taiwan.
The reciprocal measure had been on hold for more than 20 years. Continued efforts by Taiwan’s representative office in Berlin finally paid off this year, with German officials agreeing to go ahead with the policy.
Germany is Taiwan’s biggest trade partner in Europe and is home to more than 250 Taiwanese businesses. The new measure will benefit Taiwanese expats working and studying in Germany, as well as German residents of Taiwan.
