Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) announced on Friday that it is partnering with Taichung-based automotive electronics company Mobiletron to manufacture self-driving buses. The project aims to produce ten self-driving buses within two years.
The buses will be made from hardware and software derived from 14 different domestic suppliers. The ultimate goal is to establish a reliable production chain for self-driving vehicles in Taiwan.
Mobiletron has already invested NT $160 billion into developing self-driving bus technology. The company will dedicate a 43,000 square meter facility in Taichung Harbor to the production of the vehicles. The first self-driving bus will be completed in the first quarter of next year, at the earliest.
