Taipei rings in the New Year with fireworks at Taipei 101

Approximately 16,000 fireworks were set off over the course of 300 seconds during Taipei 101’s New Year’s celebration this year. One side of the skyscraper even boasted an impressive LED display made up of 140,000 separate LED bulbs.

The LED display put on a light show that accompanied the fireworks. It featured animations of Taiwan’s rare and protected species, including the leopard cat, the Formosan black bear, the Mikado pheasant, and the green sea turtle.

Taipei 101 has played host to New Year’s fireworks displays since 2005. The skyscraper and the nearby year-end concert at Taipei City Hall draw thousands of people to the city’s Xinyi District annually. The fireworks show is hailed by CNN as one of the best New Year’s celebrations in the world.
