A resident of the offshore Taiwanese island of Kinmen has removed the official flags of the People’s Republic of China from a local street in fear of being falsely accused of violating Taiwan’s new Anti-Infiltration Act.
The ruling DPP says the law, which was passed on Tuesday, will curb foreign attempts to intervene in Taiwan’s politics and elections. However, opposition lawmakers say the law is too vague and that there is a concern that people could break the law without knowing it.
Wang said he removed the flags overnight in fear that Taiwan’s government could consider him as someone who is an advocate for the Chinese government.
Wang erected the PRC flags along with the Republic of China flag, which is the national flag of Taiwan. He put them up on both sides of a busy street in Kinmen in an effort to promote cross-strait tourism exchanges.
