The foreign ministry says that Taiwan stands firm in its support for Hong Kongers’ pursuit of freedom and democracy.
On Tuesday, foreign ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou said that Taiwan is concerned about the situation in Hong Kong. The former British colony has seen continued mass pro-democracy rallies since last June. Democracy activists’ demands include true democracy and investigations into police brutality.
Ou urged China and the Hong Kong government to respond to public expectations.
Ou also expressed thanks to US Senator Rick Scott for his support for Taiwan and Hong Kong. The Republican senator tweeted on Monday “Taiwan’s election is vital to the continued fight for human rights & freedom in the region. Allowing Communist China's influence to spread will only open more doors for oppression. We must stand with our brothers & sisters in Hong Kong and Taiwan.”
Scott was a major proponent of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, which took effect in late November.
