A US defense official said Tuesday that Washington hopes to see a “free and fair” election in Taiwan this weekend. Taiwanese voters are heading to the polls to cast their ballots in the presidential and legislative elections on Saturday.
The official, David Helvey, made the comment at a seminar on US-Japan defense cooperation held in Washington. When asked if Washington and Tokyo are working to make sure Taiwan holds a fair election, Helvey said that the US-Japan alliance has identified peace and security in the Taiwan Strait as one of their top strategic objectives for decades.
Helvey said the US is also concerned about any possible outside interference that could affect Taiwan’s elections.
