Taiwan’s presidential candidates have cast their ballots in the 2020 election.

President Tsai Ing-wen, who is seeking a second term, arrived at her assigned polling place Saturday at 9:00 am. There, at an elementary school in New Taipei’s Yonghe District, she stood in line with other locally registered voters, attracting attention and causing a minor commotion. However, after around 20 minutes, the president finished casting her ballots without incident.

Afterwards, Tsai said she hopes that Taiwan’s electorate will strengthen democracy by exercising its right to vote. She also said she hopes that voting will proceed smoothly. She did not respond to questions from reporters on the scene.

Meanwhile, in the southern city of Kaohsiung, Tsai’s KMT rival, Han Kuo-yu, cast his ballot. Han is currently the city’s mayor, but he is hoping to move on to the Presidential Office. He arrived at his designated polling place, a temple in the city’s Linyuan District, early on Saturday, accompanied by his daughter.

The presence of a major figure caused a stir, with media figures surrounding Han’s daughter. However, Han also finished voting without incident. After pausing briefly to pray in the temple, he left with his daughter without answering reporters’ questions.
