Legislature holds extraordinary session to finalize 2020 budget

The Legislature is holding an extraordinary session aimed at passing the government’s 2020 budget.

This will be the Legislature’s final meeting before a new session begins February 1 and new members who won seats in last week’s election are sworn in.

Ruling and opposition camps have proposed the inclusion of more than 2,400 items from the budget. Because this number is so large, both sides have also decided to work towards an agreement that would strike as many of these items as possible from the final budget.

To expedite the review of so many proposals, the government agencies that would be affected are being invited to discuss these proposals directly with lawmakers.

Lawmakers will hold intensive consultations on January 16-17. Then, on January 20, they will then begin working towards getting a consensus on any items the two camps still disagree on. The extraordinary session is expected to close January 22.
