Taiwan to deepen cooperation with European countries: Official

The foreign ministry says Taiwan will continue deepening cooperation with European countries to safeguard freedom and democracy. That was the word from foreign ministry spokeswoman Joanne Ou on Thursday.

Ou was speaking a day after the European Parliament passed two resolutions that reiterate its support for Taiwan’s bid to join international organizations. The parliament also urged all parties involved to peacefully resolve disputes in the Taiwan Strait, in the East China Sea, and the South China Sea.

During the session where the resolutions were passed, the chair of the Taiwan Friendship Group, Michael Gahler, praised Taiwan’s just-concluded presidential race. He said Taiwan is one of the few Asian countries that can hold democratic elections freely.

Meanwhile, another member of the European Parliament, Michaela Sojdrova, praised President Tsai Ing-wen’s efforts to safeguard the interests of the Taiwanese people over the past four years in the face of Chinese pressure.
