Mobile payments a growing trend, especially among the middle-aged

More and more people are using their smartphones to pay bills. That’s according to a recent survey released by the National Development Council.

One of the big groups adopting mobile payment services are middle-aged people. The number of people in this age group who used smartphones to make payments jumped 31% from 2018 to 2019.

Like people in other parts around the world, Taiwanese consumers find mobile payments irresistible because they are fast and convenient.

But it’s not just the young generation making payments this way. Taiwan’s middle-aged people and its senior citizens love mobile payments too.

That’s because all you need is a smartphone, one shopper says. 0017 Another shopper says that he doesn’t like collecting paper receipts, and that cellphone payments make it easier to accumulate bonus points.

Statistics show that 46.4% of those aged between 46 and 55 used mobile payment in 2018. Last year, that figure jumped to 77.6%.

A similar trend was apparent among those aged 56 to 65. The number of people in this bracket who use mobile payments jumped to 52.9% last year.

One mobile payment service provider explains that bonus points are a big draw. He says mobile payments allow consumers to see clearly what they have bought and the number of bonus points they have.
