President Tsai Ing-wen says the recent presidential and legislative elections have sent a direct message to China about the will of the Taiwanese people. Tsai was speaking Monday during an interview with the Taiwan-based Era News.
President Tsai was re-elected on January 11 with a record 8.17 million votes and 57.1% of the popular vote. Tsai’s Democratic Progressive Party also retained its majority in the Legislature.
The president called on China to take note of the election results and review its policy towards Taiwan.
She reaffirmed that the government will continue promoting peace and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait while acting in line with public expectations.
Tsai also said her landslide win does not necessarily mean that she will take a stronger approach towards China, adding that maintaining peace and stability is of vital importance.
