Taiwan has just opened three brand-new stretches of highway, making it easier than ever to explore the island.
In Taiwan, sometimes the journey itself is just as fun as the destination. That’s certainly the case on Provincial Highway 61, which just opened to traffic. It follows Taiwan’s west coast and offers beautiful sunset views. The route also takes in several elegant bridges. The 245 km route takes four hours to drive end-to-end and it’s toll-free.
Another long-awaited highway that makes for an enjoyable drive has just opened on the east coast. This improvement for the Suhua Highway opened to cars on January 6. Even though most of the route passes through tunnels, drivers can now drive down Taiwan’s rugged east coast without worrying about rocks falling from above. The best thing about this road is its practicality- thanks to this highway, travel time from Su’ao to Hualien has been cut from two and a half hours to just 90 minutes.
Exploring Taiwan’s beautiful far south is now easier than ever, too. That’s thanks to the South Link of Provincial Highway 9, which took 15 years to complete. It cuts travel time from Pingtung in the south to Taitung in the east by half an hour.
Premier Su Tseng-chang has tested out the new routes. Now, with his seal of approval, they await intrepid travelers looking to discover the real Taiwan.
