VIDEO: Taiwan Lantern Festival features dazzling drone show
Taiwan Lantern Festival features dazzling drone show.

This year’s Taiwan Lantern Festival, which is set to open Saturday in the central city of Taichung will feature a dazzling drone show.

Eight hundred drones will be used to create images in the sky during the opening and closing ceremonies. That’s 500 more than at last year’s event in the southern county of Pintung.

The 2020 Taiwan Lantern Festival is featuring a spectacular performance of 800 drones. This is the Year of the Rat, so you’ll see a cute mouse. There’s also an image of Taichung’s landmark Twin Pavilions. A young girl sips boba milk tea, a popular drink invented in Taichung. And last but not least: a bicycle and one of the city’s popular bike lanes.

This drone display will be presented at both the opening and closing ceremony.

Taichung tourism official Liao Wei-chih says drones are required to fly under 200 meters, so the distance between drones is about one meter. He says these restrictions have proven extremely challenging.

Last year’s event in the southern county of Pingtung featured 500 drones… this year they’ve broken that record with 800 drones and are employing even more unique designs.

This year’s lantern displays in Taichung’s Houli District feature all kinds of lanterns, such as dinosaurs, and a giant sea turtle in the undersea world.
