US officials have welcomed the invitation of Vice-President-elect William Lai to the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. That’s according to head of the China Aid Association, Bob Fu, who had a hand in arranging Lai’s invitation.
Lai attended the event on Thursday.
Fu invited Lai after hearing of Lai’s concern for oppressed groups in China. At the time Lai had recently stepped down as Taiwan’s premier, and he had not yet been elected Vice President.
After Lai’s election, Fu says he realized how sensitive Lai’s attendance at the prayer breakfast might be. However, event organizers said that Lai was still welcome to attend.
Fu says that no US official raised opposition or concern with Lai’s attendance, including White House and State Department officials.
