Lai: Taiwan’s medical expertise up to the challenge of coronavirus
Vice President-elect William Lai says Taiwan's medical system is prepared to tackle the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

Vice President-elect William Lai says he believes that Taiwan has the medical expertise it needs to combat the novel coronavirus outbreak. He was speaking Monday upon returning from Washington DC, where he recently attended the US National Prayer Breakfast.

Lai said that while he was in the US, his heart remained in Taiwan, as medical workers dealt with a number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus.

The vice president-elect said that although the government has done well in responding to the outbreak, public unease remains. He called on citizens to follow the government’s policies and urged calm, pointing to Taiwan’s expertise in preventing disease and the country’s strong public healthcare system.
