William Lai: US and Taiwan can use RTI to encourage victims of religious persecution

Vice President-elect William Lai said that the US and Taiwan could work together and use Taiwan's national radio station, Radio Taiwan International (RTI), to encourage victims of religious persecution in China. RTI broadcasts via short and medium wave to China and the world.

Lai made the comments during his speech last week at the International Religious Freedom Roundtable in Washington DC during his recent trip to the US. At the event, Sam Brownback, U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom introduced Lai as Taiwan’s Vice President-elect.

Taiwan hosted its first Indo-Pacific forum on religious freedom last March. When Brownback visited Taiwan at that time, he also went on the RTI program Serving the People to speak to victims of religious persecution in China.

At the event, Lai also spoke about Taiwan’s role in promoting democracy and freedom in the region. He said many Tibetans have demonstrated in Taiwan for freedom. Taiwan has also assisted many people from Hong Kong during their protests.
