COVID-19: Transport ministry plans subsidy package for airlines
Transportation minister Lin Chia-lung

The transportation ministry has allocated NT$4.2 billion (US$140 million) to help Taiwan’s airlines through the COVID-19 outbreak. On Wednesday, the ministry said that the subsidies will help cover rental costs, landing fees, and royalties.

However, the ministry says that airlines may not be able to avoid having to lay off some employees.

Transportation Minister Lin Chia-lung has warned airlines not to put the burden of financial losses due to the outbreak onto travel agencies or passengers. Lin said that in addition to helping the aviation industry weather the outbreak, his ministry will also work to guarantee passengers’ rights and help the tourism industry.
