Taiwan’s representative office in New York says that UN Women’s mislabeling of Taiwan as part of China is unacceptable.
UN Women is the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A recent UN Women report, jointly produced by the Geneva-based Inter-Parliamentary Union, found that Taiwan has the highest proportion of female lawmakers anywhere in Asia.
The report also showed that Taiwan has the world’s 16th-highest proportion of female lawmakers. However, a map in the report shows Taiwan as part of China, which has only the 75th-highest proportion of female lawmakers.
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York responded to the map with message to UN Women’s Twitter account. The office tweeted “Unacceptable! You claim that you stand for women and democracy, yet you erase the democratic #Taiwan from the map. We’ve proudly elected a female president and almost 42% of our legislators are female. #China, with no popular elections, cannot even begin to compare to Taiwan.”
