COVID-19: Six imported cases bring total to 59
Health Minister Chen Shih-chung announces six new imported cases of COVID-19 at a press conference Sunday.

Taiwan confirmed six new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing the total number of cases since the outbreak began up to 59. This is the biggest single-day increase in the number of COVID-19 cases Taiwan has reported so far.

All six new cases are imported. Between them, the six new patients had recently traveled to Thailand, Japan, Egypt, Turkey, the UAE, Spain, and Greece.

Still, one patient, a high school student recently returned from a family trip to Greece, did not develop symptoms until Thursday, a full week after arriving in Taiwan. He only sought medical attention on Friday, meaning that anyone he was in contact with after his return are also at risk of infection. So far, the government is aware of 16 people the student came into contact with after his return to Taiwan.

The government has shut down classes the student’s grade was enrolled in for two weeks. Meanwhile, the student’s entire school is set to undergo disinfection.
