A national middle school sporting event has opened on schedule despite the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. But to keep everyone involved safe, the organizers have decided to hold their opening ceremony in a decidedly unconventional way.
Pingtung City Mayor Pan Men-an has recorded a dance video for the opening of this year’s National Middle School Athletics Games. His city is hosting this year’s games. To ensure everyone taking part stays healthy amid the COVID-19 outbreak, this year’s opening ceremony has gone entirely virtual.
Though it may not have taken place in the real world, this special ceremony didn’t lack excitement. There was a light show using drones and a fireworks show. There was also a heroes’ march and a concert put on by celebrity singers.
Pan says this is the first time these national games will be held with no spectators in the benches. Also for the first time in history, the event has come out with stickers to give a little boost to the athletes.
