Next two weeks crucial for containment of COVID-19: Premier

Premier Su Tseng-chang says that the next two weeks will be crucial for curbing the spread of COVID-19 in Taiwan.

Taiwan has seen a jump in the number of confirmed cases over the past few days. The total number of confirmed cases since the start of the outbreak now stands at 100.

Most of the new cases are imported, having been brought in by recent visitors to the United States and Europe. In response, the government has sealed Taiwan’s borders to most foreign nationals and is requiring all arriving regardless of citizenship to go into quarantine for fourteen days.

At a Cabinet meeting Thursday, Premier Su Tseng-chang said that Taiwan has done a good job containing COVID-19 since it appeared in Wuhan, China in December. He demanded that all government agencies work hard to avoid a “second” wave of infections in Taiwan.

Su also said that a stimulus package aimed at boosting the economy and mitigating the effects of the COVID-19 should be distributed evenly among the hardest-hit industries.
