Taiwan’s High Prosecutor’s Office warns that hoarding certain supplies in order to inflate their price is a crime punishable by up to seven years in prison and a fine of NT$5million (US$165,000).
As news reports focus on anxious buyers making a run on stores, the government is reassuring citizens that Taiwan’s stock of essential items can meet demand.
The High Prosecutor’s Office says it has set up a platform to investigate those engaged in illegal hoarding. The office says it will punish anyone found hoarding essentials and reselling them for a profit to the full extent of the law.
