Seventy-two Taiwanese citizens who had been stranded in Peru arrived back in Taiwan on Thursday evening. That's according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They are among 132 Taiwanese people who became stranded after the Peruvian government grounded commercial flights on March 16 to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Despite shutting down commercial air links, Peru has continued to approve certain charter flights. The 72 Taiwanese people who left Peru paid to charter a private jet to take them to Miami. From there, they returned to Taiwan on separate flights.
Taiwan’s representative office in Peru says that while 60 Taiwanese citizens remain in Peru, not all of them have an immediate need to leave the country.
