President Tsai Ing-wen says the government will inject NT$1.05 trillion (US$34.6 billion) into a budget designed to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tsai said Wednesday that the government has been evaluating the scope and content of the budget. She said that an extra NT$150 billion (US$5 billion) will be added to the budget to prepare for any unknowns.
Tsai said that stimulus spending, boosting the economy, and restructuring Taiwan’s industries will rely on the public and private sectors.
Meanwhile, the economics ministry says it will ensure a steady supply of basic goods and personal protective equipment and make sure that prices of these goods remain stable. The government has set a target of producing15 million surgical masks a day, and it has increased the number of protective gowns in storage to twice the amount mandated by law.
