The government has imposed a ban on using ZOOM, a popular video communications tool, due to security concerns.
Zoom CEO Eric Yuan admitted last Friday that the company mistakenly routed some calls via China.
As the COVID-19 outbreak has intensified, there has been a growing demand for videoconferencing software.
However, the Department of Cyber Security under the Cabinet barred ZOOM for official use. In a letter to all government agencies and certain unofficial organizations on Tuesday, the department suggested using free software provided by Google or Microsoft if needed.
The Cyber Security Management Act went into effect last year. Government agencies are required by law to protect Taiwan’s information security by either using Taiwan-made products or software deemed safe by the government.
