China puts politics before human rights and health: Foreign ministry

The foreign ministry is accusing China of putting politics before human rights and health. That’s the word from Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Joanne Ou on Tuesday.

Ou’s comments came after a petition in support of Taiwan’s WHA bid was endorsed by over 80 French parliamentarians. The petition was initiated by Taiwanese students studying in France.

To support Taiwan’s bid to join the World Health Assembly, Taiwanese students published an article in the French media outlet L’Obs about why the WHA should work with Taiwan. The article has received endorsement from lawmakers in Taiwan and France.

But the Chinese embassy in France protested against the article and said it is politically motivated.

Ou criticized China’s repeated attempts to put politics before human rights and health, as well as its cover-up of the COVID-19 outbreak. By contrast, she said Taiwan’s efforts to curb the spread of the disease have not only been successful, but have underlined the necessity of Taiwan’s bid to join the WHA.
