A prison in the northeastern county of Yilan is requiring inmates to exercise twice a day in order to strengthen their immune systems against COVID-19.
Prisons are difficult places to follow the social distancing rules the government has put in place to fight COVID-19. That puts prisoners at a special risk of infection.
At one Yilan County prison, inmates are being sent out to beef up their immunity through exercise. Twice a day, they are sent out into an exercise yard with surgical masks on. Guards ensure that inmates keep a safe distance from one another as they follow the routine.
A prison official says the inmates enjoy these workouts.
The routine incorporates elements of indigenous Taiwanese dance, helping to strengthen leg muscles in particular.
Inmates are also being taught proper hand-washing to stay healthy and relaxation techniques to reduce stress as the pandemic continues.
