Premier Su Tseng-chang says showing the world the difference between Taiwan and China is absolutely necessary. Su was speaking Tuesday.
Su’s comments came after the public called on the government to change certain names to avoid confusion with China. One is Taiwan’s flag carrier China Airlines (CAL), which was founded in 1959. Another is the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL), the one and only professional league based in Taiwan.
Su told lawmakers it’s true that Taiwan has often been confused with China in the global community. He said it’s important to raise Taiwan’s profile and tell the world that Taiwan is not a part of China.
In recent weeks, China Airlines has transported face masks donated by the Taiwan government to other parts around the world. People have mistakenly thought that the medical supplies are from China.
Also on Tuesday, the Presidential Office said the government will continue discussing the name change issue with the public and the legislature as it involves Taiwan’s aviation rights.
