Taiwan thanks S. Korea for helping citizens stranded in Guatemala

The foreign ministry has thanked South Korea for helping evacuate three Taiwanese citizens from Guatemala.

The Central American country closed its borders in a bid to stop the spread of COVID-19, leaving foreigners there with no way to leave.

Guatemala is one of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies, and Taiwan’s embassy in the country was able to help arrange the departure of seven Taiwanese citizens stranded there. However, three other Taiwanese citizens remained unable to leave.

South Korea offered seats to these three Taiwanese citizens on a charter flight evacuating its own nationals from Guatemala. The initial leg of the flight landed in Mexico, from which the three Taiwanese citizens were able to transfer to other flights that could take them back home.
